Clear-eyed news & commentary

Terms of use

Effective date: 21 October 2026

These terms govern your use of The Borealian at www.borealian.ca, including our newsletters, memberships, and contact form. In these terms, “The Borealian,” “we,” and “us” mean the publication and The Borealian’s owner. “You” means anyone who reads the site or uses its services.

Accepting these terms

By using the site, you agree to these terms and to our privacy policy. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the site. If you create a membership or buy a subscription, you confirm that you’re old enough to enter a binding contract where you live, or that a parent or guardian has agreed to these terms for you.

Commentary, not advice

The Borealian publishes commentary and opinion on politics, economics, international affairs, and business. Our columns argue a point of view. They are not financial, investment, legal, tax, or other professional advice.

This applies in particular to Business & Markets, where Beaverbrook writes about companies, markets, and investing. Nothing on the site is a recommendation to buy, sell, or hold any security or other investment, and nothing takes into account your own circumstances. Consult a qualified professional before acting on anything you read here.

We work to get facts right and to correct errors promptly and visibly. If you spot one, tell us through the contact form with the subject “Correction.”

Pen names and AI assistance

Our regular columns run under house pen names: Grant, Innis, Cartier, Beaverbrook, and Leacock. These names don’t identify individual writers, and a column may be written by a guest contributor.

Some articles are drafted with AI assistance. Every such piece is then edited and checked by The Borealian, with facts checked against public sources, before publication. We don’t present AI-generated text as original reporting, and we don’t invent quotations, interviews, or sources. The Borealian, as publisher, is responsible for everything that appears under its pen names.

Intellectual property and permitted use

The articles, newsletters, graphics, logo, and design of The Borealian belong to us or to the people who licensed them to us, and are protected by copyright and other laws.

You may:

  • read the site and newsletters for your own personal, non-commercial use;
  • share links to our articles on social media, by email, or anywhere else; and
  • quote short passages for comment, criticism, review, or news reporting, with credit to The Borealian and a link to the original article where possible.

You may not republish whole articles or substantial parts of them, put paid content where non-members can read it, sell or license our content, or remove copyright notices. You may not use automated tools to copy or scrape the site in bulk, including to train AI systems, without our written permission. To ask for permission, use the contact form.

Memberships and paid subscriptions

Free membership. A free membership lets you receive our newsletters, such as The Borealian Morning, and read members-only articles. You can unsubscribe from any newsletter with the link in each email.

Paid subscriptions. A paid subscription removes ads and gives you access to paid content. Prices and billing periods are shown when you subscribe. Payments are processed by Stripe through our publishing platform, Ghost. By subscribing, you authorize us, through Stripe, to charge your payment method at the start of each billing period until you cancel. If we change your price, we will tell you before the new price applies.

Cancellation. You can cancel at any time from your account page on the site, or by asking us through the contact form. Your subscription stays active until the end of the period you’ve already paid for, and you won’t be charged again.

Refunds. Payments are non-refundable and cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, except that a new annual subscriber who asks within 14 days of the first annual charge receives a full refund. We may also refund at our discretion, for example after a duplicate charge. Nothing in these terms limits any refund rights you have under consumer protection law.

We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms. If we close a paid account for any other reason, we will refund the unused part of the current period.

Letters, tips, corrections, and pitches

We welcome letters, tips, corrections, and pitches through the contact form and our Write for us page.

Letters. Letters should run to about 250 words and include your name and city or town. We choose which letters to publish, often in a periodic Letters roundup. We may edit letters for length, clarity, and house style, but we keep your argument and meaning. We publish your name and city or town as you gave them, and never your email address or other contact details. We withhold a name only for a real safety reason, at our discretion.

Tips and corrections. Tips are leads, not sources. We check anything you send against the public record before we use it, and we may not reply to every message.

Pitches. We reply when we can take a piece. We may already be working on ideas similar to yours, and receiving a pitch doesn’t oblige us to anything. Guest contributions are unpaid.

Your licence to us. You keep the copyright in what you send. By submitting a letter, tip, correction, or other material for publication, you give The Borealian a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide, and perpetual licence to publish, edit, and reproduce it on the site, in newsletters, and in related channels such as social media, in whole or in part. You confirm that the material is your own and that publishing it won’t break anyone else’s rights.

Conduct rules

Anything you send us must not:

  • defame anyone, or make allegations about a person or company that you can’t support;
  • harass, threaten, or abuse anyone, or attack people based on identity;
  • reveal private information about another person, including home addresses, phone numbers, or details about minors;
  • infringe copyright or other rights, or include material you aren’t allowed to share;
  • impersonate someone, or be part of a mass or co-ordinated campaign;
  • contain spam, advertising, malware, or links meant to mislead; or
  • break the law, including court-ordered publication bans.

We may decline, edit, or delete submissions that break these rules, and block anyone who repeatedly does.

Affiliate and advertising disclosure

As an Amazon Associate, The Borealian earns from qualifying purchases. The Borealian may also earn a commission when you buy through other links marked “Affiliate link.” It doesn’t change what we recommend, or what you pay.

Affiliate links appear mainly in Hodgepodge picks. Any affiliate link in an article is marked “(affiliate link).” Ads shown to free readers are clearly marked as advertising, and any sponsored content will carry a “Sponsored” label and never a columnist’s pen name. Advertisers and affiliate partners have no say over our editorial content.

We link to sources, retailers, and other websites. We don’t control them and aren’t responsible for their content, products, or privacy practices. Your use of them is governed by their own terms.

Disclaimer and limitation of liability

The site and its content are provided “as is” and “as available.” We try to keep the site accurate and available, but we don’t promise that it will be error-free, up to date, or uninterrupted.

To the fullest extent the law allows, The Borealian and its owner, contributors, and service providers aren’t liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential loss, or for any loss arising from decisions you make based on our content. Our total liability to you for any claim related to the site is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or $50 if you paid nothing.

Some laws, including some provincial consumer protection laws, don’t allow these limits. Where that’s the case, they apply only as far as the law permits.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada that apply there. Any dispute will be heard in the courts of Ontario, unless the law where you live gives you the right to bring it there.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. We will post the new version on this page with a new effective date, and tell members by email or a site notice if a change is significant. If you keep using the site after a change takes effect, you accept the updated terms.
